Spirit Eagles Teams Earn Berth to National Indoor Tournament

This past weekend, in three different tournaments across Pennsylvania, the Spirit Eagles club teams earned berths in the USFHA National Indoor event to be held on March 9 through March 11 in Virginia Beach, Virginia by placing in the top tier of each event.

Spirit Eagles U19 Jersey City

Back row- Hannah Weitzman,Olivia Shelton,Head Coach Dennis Lallo, Amanda Sawasky,Kendell Deck, Maria Caro
Front row- Melissa Casle, Sammy Billy, Alex Okuniewicz, Lyndsey Caliendo

Spirit Eagles U19 Jersey City, led by veteran Coach Dennis Lallo placed 4th in Collegeville, Pennsylvania despite losing their standout Penn State bound co-captain, Cindy Donald, to a jaw injury in the first match. Jersey City pulled together as a team and received outstanding performances from Sammy Billy, Alex Okuniewicz, Kendall Deck and Hannah Weitzman, who is heading off to American University this fall.

USFHA Future Elite player Sammy Billy controlled the middle and fed the proactive forwards and backs, including Melissa Casale, Maria Caro, Amanda Sawasky and Olivia Shelton. Billy’s attacking and decision-making skills led the Jersey City attack to make full use of the whole court. Lyndsey Caliendo shared the goalkeeping duties with Weitzman, and together they frustrated the opposition’s scoring opportunities throughout the day.

Spirit Eagles U19 Milltown

Marrissa Waldamore , Katie Weir, Erica Cullum , Sara Alderman , Courtney Bergin,Coorinne Raczek, Erica Perrine (GK), Talyor Sankovich,Leslie Springmeyer, Head Coach Randy Christie

Spirit Eagles U19 Milltown, coached by former USA-International player Randy Christie, qualified for the NIT as well. Coach Christie inspired Milltown to finish in the top 4 of the State College, Pennsylvania Qualifier Tournament. The Milltown team benefited from exceptional team play by Pingry’s Taylor Sankovich and Leslie Springmeyer. Yale bound Erica Cullum, Corinne Raczek who will be attending Bucknell in the fall, and Marissa Waldemore demonstrated senior leadership for the team, whose other members include Courtney Bergin,Erica Perrine(GK),Katie Weir and Sara Alderman

US High Performance Coach Issar, commenting about Marissa Waldemore stated, “I have no doubt Marissa will be an impact college player. She knows how to strip the ball and cause defensive nightmares with passing and one v. one skills.”

Spirit Eagles U16 South

Back Row- Head coach Craig Sacco Asst coach Clarissa Sacco
Middle row- Anna Tichy, Kara Colicchio Pauline Echier, Katie Gallagher,
Front Row-Amanda Radwell , Dana Pignatello , Shannon Hughes
Laying down – GK Erin Langan

The Spirit Eagles U16 South team is coached by Craig Sacco. Craig guided the South team to a 3rd place finish at State College! This relatively inexperienced group, with fewer than 10 total prior matches, set an awesome example of how to work like a team!!!

Stellar performances were produced from Shawnee’s Amanda Radwell who was solid in defense and on the attack after tackling and winning the ball.

Bridgewater’s Anna Tichy was a goal-scoring threat every time she received the ball in the scoring area. She was strong on the ball and demonstrated the rare ability to shoot with a clear purpose at any moment within the circle.

South GK Millburn’s Erin Langan, who bolted down the cage for the day, was vital to limiting the goals against. Erin covered the full circle and hads no fear on any shots that were taken on her. Her play was vital to the team’s success.

Other U16 South team members who contributed to the team’s success include Kara Colicchio,Pauline Echier,Shannon Hughes and Katie Gallagher.

The entire Spirit Eagles club wishes these teams the best of heading the NIT, where only the best teams qualify. Spirit Eagles Group Inc. has a proud tradition at this tournament and these teams likewise have the talent and the dedication to perform well and win.
